Location Overview:

Bhutan is a tiny Buddhist kingdom nestling in the Himalayas between India and China. It is characterized by steep mountains and deep valleys. It is appreciated for its natural beauty, vibrant culture, historical attractions, spiritual sites, and intrepid adventure.

Thimphu is Bhutan’s capital and the country’s largest city. It is situated in the western central part of Bhutan. The important festival of Tshechu is celebrated in Tashichho Dzong.

Paro is a historic town with many sacred sites and historical buildings. It is famous for Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest).

Punakha is a quaint little town in west-central Bhutan and once served as the capital of Bhutan.  A prominent landmark is the Punakha Dzong (the palace of great happiness or bliss), which is the administrative centre of Punakha District.

Itinerary Itinerary


Bagdogra  Arrival Phuentsholing (4 hrs)

  • Meet & greet on arrival at Bagdogra Airport and drive towards Indo-Bhutan Border (Jaigaon-Phuentsholing). The journey takes you through the scenic tea estates of West Bengal. 

  • After reaching Phuentsholing, check in to the hotel & evening at leisure.

Phuentsholing  Thimphu (5 hrs)

  • After breakfast proceed towards Thimpu via the wonderful mystic town Gedu, which is about 9000 ft above sea level, and Chukha Dam. 

  • Reach Thimphu and relax.

  • In the evening visit Tashichho Dzong or the Fortress of the Glorious Region.

Thimphu – Punakha Excursion

  • After breakfast, take an excursion to Punakha. You will cover the following:

  • Punakha Dzong: Pungtang Dechen Phortang Dzong is located at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and the Po Chhu Rivers, and is the second oldest Dzong in Bhutan.

  • Punakha Suspension Bridge: Take a walk to the bridge. This is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the world and is believed to be built by the Buddhist Monk, Thangtong Gyalpo.

  • Chimi Lhakhang: At Lobesa, a 20-min hike leads you to Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the ‘Temple of Fertility.’ The temple sits on the top of a small round hill surrounded by rice fields.

  • Dochula Pass (3,100 m): This Pass is probably the best-known mountain pass in Bhutan. It’s about 30 km away from the capital city Thimphu on the road to Punakha. On a clear day, the pass offers visitors a spectacular view of the majestic eastern Himalayan ranges. The pass is also marked by the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens.

Thimphu Sightseeing - Paro

  • After breakfast, check out from the hotel and start your local Thimphu sightseeing tour, which will cover the following places:
  • The National Memorial Chorten or Thimpu Chorten

  • Sakyamuni Buddha: On the top of Kuensel Phodrang hill sits the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. The 51.5 meter long bronze statue would surely attract you and the uninterrupted view of the valley would leave you spellbound. 


  • Changangkha Lhakhan: It is among the most important religious structures in Thimphu. 

  • The National Library: It houses a fabulous collection of Buddhist manuscripts which are priceless. It also houses the world’s largest published book (5X7 feet) and weighs about 130 pounds.

  • Textile Museum: Get to know the living national art of weaving at the Textile Museum. The museum exhibits major weaving techniques, styles of local dress, and textiles made by the local women and men.

  • Takin Mini Zoo: Takin is the national animal of Bhutan and looks like a cross between a cow and a goat. 

  • Riverview point.

  • At the end of the sightseeing tour, you will travel to Paro.

Hike Day (Paro)

  • Hike to the famous Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest). Clinging to a steep cliff at more than 3,000m, the hike to the monastery will take approximately 3 hours one way.

  • Relax for the rest of the day.

Paro Sightseeing – Phuentsholing

  • Today you will go on a sightseeing tour of Paro and will be visiting the following places:

  • Simtokha Dzong. 

  • National Museum of Bhutan: It is situated right above Rinpung Dzong in Paro.

  • Drukgyal Dzong: Drukgyal Dzong was once a fortress and Buddhist monastery, which now lies in ruins.
     
  • Nya Mey Zam Bridge: "The Bridge with No Fish " is the bridge that connects Paro Town to Dzong. 

  • Paro Airport Viewpoint: This viewpoint overlooks the Paro river along with other dzongs and monasteries.

  • Return to Phuentsholing.
