Arrive Paro & Thimphu

Arrive at Paro International Airport, drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. The flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular mountain flights in the world, with a constantly changing panorama of some of the highest mountains on earth. After lunch, enjoy a sightseeing tour around Paro, including a visit to the National Museum, Ta Dzong. This museum houses many religious relics, works of art, and handicrafts offering a great orientation into Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and religious past. Next, visit the Rimpong Dzong to see the painting of the great saint Milarepa, considered as the master of meditation by the Bhutanese and believed to have attained enlightenment. Later, transfer to Thimphu.

Thimphu

Enjoy a full day of sightseeing in Thimphu starting with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten depicting the Buddhist faith in the form of paintings and statues. You will also visit the 12th-century Changangkha Temple and Drubthob Monastery housing the Zilukha Nunnery. If time permits, you may visit the nursing pen for the Takin, the national animal of Bhutan, and Tashichhodzong.

Thimphu

Visit the School for Arts and Crafts where students are taught the 13 types of Bhutanese art. Other sites to visit include The National Library housing the collection of Bhutanese scriptures dating back to the 8th century, the Traditional Paper Factory displaying the Bhutanese paper making process, the post office to view some of Bhutan’s famous stamps, and a fascinating replica of a medieval farmhouse at the Folk Heritage Museum.

Thimphu – Sinchula (4-5 hrs trek)

Drive towards Dechhencholing to Kabjesha to start the trek. The trek begins with a 4-5 hour climb to Sinchula Pass-through blue pine, oak, and rhododendron forests. Your halt for the night is in a camp at Sinchula at an altitude of 3380 m.

Sinchula – Dupsingpang (5-6 hrs trek)

On a clear day, views of Phajoding Monastery and some of the Himalayan peaks can be seen. The first part of the trek is rather slow due to difficult trail conditions. After an hour’s walk, the village of Thinley Gang, Talo Monastery, and the highway to Thimphu can be seen. The trail leads on for 4-5 hours through mixed forests to the camp at 2440 m.

Dupshingpang – Chorten Nebu (7-8 hrs trek)

The third day of the trek starts with a 4-hour descent through dense forests. A small stream has to be crossed twice. Continue for another 3-4 hours through villages and rice fields to the village of Chorten Nebu, an old temple. Overnight at camp at an altitude of 1810 m.

Chorten Ningpo – Punakha

The trek will take you through several villages till you reach your vehicle. Next, you will drive to Punakha, which is the ancient capital of Bhutan. In Punakha, you will visit Sangchen Dorji Lhendrupchling Nunnery, which is located above Khuruthang town.

Punakha – Paro

This morning visit Punakha Dzong, built-in 1637 by the Shabdrung, the ‘Unifier of Bhutan’ as predicted by the great Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava). It is situated at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu Rivers and is the winter headquarters of the Je Khenpo. The 3-story main temple of the Punakha Dzong is a breathtaking example of traditional architecture with four intricately embossed entrance pillars crafted from cypress and decorated in gold and silver.

Afterward, proceed to Paro. On arrival in Paro, check into the hotel.

Paro

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the base of Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). It is the most famous and sacred site among all the places in Bhutan. You have to hike for about 2 hours till the top through wide pathways that were built during the restoration works. You will also find a tea point after an hour into the climb. From there, you get a very good view of the monastery. They also serve lunch here. From there, it’s another 45-minute climb to the 2nd viewpoint and the highest point of the hike.

In the afternoon drive to the almost fully reconstructed Drukgyel Dzong.  The original monument (destroyed by fire in 1951) was built by Shabdrung to commemorate his victory against invading Tibetans in 1644. In fine weather, the towering peak of the sacred Mount Jomolhari (7314 m) appears as a stunning backdrop. On the return drive to Paro, visit other sites in Paro valley. Overnight stay at your hotel in Paro.
