Sandwiched between Bhutan and China, this remote valley lies in north-western corner of Arunachal Pradesh. It is situated at the head of the valley formed by the Namyang Chu river which eventually flows into Bhutan. Snow clad mountains as far as Bhutan can be seen from here on a clear day. Local population is mostly Monpa tribal’s, practicing Buddhism. It is quite common to see men and women dressed in the traditional dresses with a small cap made from yak hair. The Valley is famous for the black necked cranes and the escape route taken by Dalai Lama when he fled Tibet.

Formed by a flash flood after an earthquake in the year 1950, Madhuri Lake is originally known as Shonga-tser Lake, which is one of the most popular lakes in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. The lake was renamed so after the shooting of Bollywood movie Koyla, starring Madhuri Dixit. The lake has been surrounded by wonderfully lush valleys, and snow-capped mountains. A leisure walk is the best way to explore the picturesque surroundings of the lake.

The sky looming high stupa was constructed by Lama Prathar from Kharman village in Zemithang, in 13th Century A.D., it stands featuring 186 feet base and 93 feet high is the modeled after Boudhinath stupa of Nepal. Thousands of devotees visit during Gorzam Kora festival to observe the virtuous occasion during the last day of the first month of the lunar calendar.

15 kms ahead of Zemithang is the small check post of Surwa Samba, this post falls under the international border zone, and is manned by Indian Army. His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama is reported to have escaped in March 1959 through the same route from Lhasa, China(Tibet) to Tawang via Khenzamani in Zemithang. There is a small war memorial in honor of the 4th Grenadiers fought the battle of Drokhung – Samba bridge. Due to close proximity to the International border with China permission is required from the Army Camp.
Situated 30 kms away from Zemithang village, Taktsang Gompa is believed to have been honored by Guru Padmasambhava’s visit during the 8th century. Your eyes cannot feed enough on the spectacular views from here. The thick coniferous forest and lofty mountains surrounding the monastery, which is located on the ridge of a hill, render magic to the air. You are sure to be overwhelmed by the serene atmosphere that makes you feel one with nature.

The Bum La Pass is located about 37 km away from Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, at the Indo-China border above 4200 m above sea level. This pass formed the traditional trade route between the communities in Tawang and Tsona Dzong in Tibet. During the 1962 Sino – Indian war one of the fiercest battle took place at Bumla, closing the trade route. This route was re opened for trade after 44 years in 2006. For visiting domestic tourist require permission from the Indian Army.
