The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI Darjeeling) was established in Darjeeling, India on 4 November 1954 to encourage mountaineering as an organized sport in India. The first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary sparked a keen interest in establishing mountaineering as a well-respected endeavor for people in the region. The high light of this institute is a museum, an artificial indoor climbing wall and the film shows. Memorials of Late Tenzing Norgay and late Nawang Gompu are also on the premises.
Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park also called the Darjeeling Zoo is on 67.56-acrenear the Himalaya Mountaineering Institute. The zoo was opened in 1958, and an average elevation of 7,000 feet, is the largest high altitude zoo in India. It specializes in breeding animals adapted to alpine conditions, and has successful captive breeding programs for the snow leopard, the critically endangered Himalayan Wolf and the Red Panda. The park is named after Padmaja Naidu, daughter of Sarojini Naidu who was the Governor of West Bengal.

Happy Valley Tea Estate is a tea garden in Darjeeling district established in 1854, it is Darjeeling's second oldest tea estate. Spread over 177 hectares, it is situated at a height of 6,900 ft above sea level, 3 kilometers north of Darjeeling. This tea estate is the closest to Darjeeling town, and which would offer trips around the factory and tea tasting. The months of March to May are the busiest time here, when plucking and processing are in progress.
