Perched on the high hills of the eastern corner of India, Mizoram is a home of rich variety of flora and fauna distributed in its lush green, diversified terrain with steep slopes separated by rivers rolling towards north and south. With its deep gorges between the hills and falls, green valleys and streams, Mizoram is blessed with natural beauty. Apart from its natural beauties, Mizoram is host to numerous species of birds, wildlife and flora. Mammal species observed in Mizoram forests include Slow loris (Sahuai), the state animal Red Serow (Saza), Goral (Sathar), Tiger (Sakei), Leopard (Keite), Clouded Leopard (Kelral), Leopard Cat (Sanghar), and Asiatic black bear (Savawm), Sun bear (Samang/mangthir). The state is also home to many reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.
Located about 180 km to the north-east of Aizawl, Mt. Lengteng which has been declared a wildlife sanctuary is the second-highest mountain with a height of 2141 mt (7024 ft). Covering 60 sq.km of sub - tropical broad leaf and tropical evergreen forests interspersed with sheer rocky cliffs, Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna and is home to the endangered state bird, Vavu (Mrs. Hume's Pheasant), hornbills, pheasants etc and endangered mammals like the Slow Loris, Leopard, Leopard Cat, Serow, Goral, Asiatic Black Bear, Stump-tailed Macaque and Capped Langur. This lofty wildlife sanctuary boasts of orchids of various hues and beautiful flowering trees like rhododendrons, cherry etc.
Situated close to the Indo - Myanmar border of Champhai District about 245 km from Aizawl, Murlen National Park is well known for being one of the few remaining refuges of Mizoram state bird, Vavu (Mrs Hume's Pheasant). Covering 100 sq.km of virgin forests, the park consists of sub-tropical evergreen forest and sub - montane forests which are home to various mammals and birds. There are also sheer rocky cliffs clustered with honey combs and a buzzing with swifts and swallows. Murlen is ideal for bird-watching.
