Tranquil and scenic is what Thangu valley is all about. Due to its high altitude located of around 3962 m, it is covered in the blanket of snow almost all the time. The valley comprises alpine meadows that are flanked by shimmering water of River Teesta and wooden houses, offering a picturesque sight to witness. Tree lines disappear at Thangu and start a zone that can be compared only with the unreachable terrain in Tibetan plateau. It is situated on the high alpine plateau; Thangu can be an ideal place for the real nature lovers. Thangu has a large military base as the place is close to the Chinese border.
David Neil Cave – a short hike above the village of Kelep is the anchorite cave, “Deuthang Ney” where Alexandra David Neil exercised the methods of Tibetan yogis. A French lady on behest of Dali Lama met Lachen Gomchen Rinpoche, and took tutelage from him. She was sometimes in tsam, that is to retreat for several days without seeing anyone, and she learned the technique of tummo, which mobilized her internal energy to produce heat. As a result of this apprenticeship, her master, the Gomchen of Lachen, gave her the religious name of Yshe Tome, "Lamp of Sagesse".
Lama Angden Base Camp – The hike to Lama Angden base Camp. A gentle climb from Lachen will get you to Lama Angden Camp. This is ideal place to enjoy the beauty of nature, and is partly in Khangchendzongna National Park. The trek is of 3 to 4 hours depending upon your speed and stamina. Overnight camping will be an ideal plan.
