Explore the offbeat side of Sikkim, from trout farming villages and hikes to staying at traditional/quirky homestays.

The quiet towns of Temi Tarku, Okhrey, Sreebadam, and Hee Bermiok are located in idyllic locales where life is slow-paced and the major occupations are farming and trout rearing.

Itinerary Itinerary


Gangtok – Temi Tarku – Namchi 

Your trip starts with a picturesque drive from Gangtok to Namchi. En route you will be making a halt at Temi Tea Factory, the largest organic tea garden in Sikkim. Enjoy a relaxed walk and sample Temi’s specialty teas here. Post lunch, you will drive on to Damthang Biodiversity Park, a wonderful park maintained by Dept of Forest. This park has a conservatory with medicinal plants and herbs found in Sikkim’s Himalayas. If thrill-seeking activities are more up your alley, then you can instead visit the Himalayan Institute of Adventure Sports & Ecotourism at Chemchey to try out outdoor rock climbing, rappelling, and other adventure activities. Once you reach Namchi, you will check into a traditional homestay where you will be welcomed by your local hosts. Evening activities include an evening walk to Namchi’s helipad area, where you get a stunning view of the sky, and the golden Sai Mandir.

Namchi – Okhrey (Bhareng) 

Today, you will be heading to Okhrey via Jorethang, the market town for South & West Sikkim. You will pass Daramdim, a place made famous because of Lepcha folklore about a stairway to heaven situated here. Daramdim is also known for floriculture, especially roses. Once you reach Okhrey, you will again check into a homestay. Okhrey is a famous destination for hikers going to the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. In the evening, you can take a short hike up to Latteytar Monastery.

Okhrey – Hilley – Barsey – Hilley (hike) 

You will be driving to Hilley and checking into Mushroom Homestay for an offbeat accommodation. This homestay is a stone’s throw away from the trail head for Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. Today, you will be taking the picturesque hike up to Barsey. The hike is fairly easy, and during the right season, you can find the rhododendron trees in full bloom.

Hilley – Buriakhop  – Sreebadam – Hee-Bermiok 

You will head to Hee-Bermiok today. On the way, you will stop at a village in Buriakhop where you will be given insights into organic farming practices in Sikkim.  Another interesting halt will be made in the village of Sreebadam. Famous for rainbow trout farming, you will get time to observe the rearing process followed by lunch and a visit to a monastery.

Your overnight stay is at Red Mud Chalet Resort. 
 Hee-Bermiok – Chayataal 

Get ready to enjoy a scenic 1-hour drive from Hee-Bermiok to Chayatal. Enroute you can stop at Water Garden. Post check-in at the Chayataal Heritage Homestay, you can walk up to the statue of Srijunga and onwards to Chaya Taal and Hee Water Garden.

Chayataal – Hathi Dhunga – Gangtok 

Today you are heading to an interesting destination—Azing’s Model Farm in Hathi Dhunga. This delightful farm grows organic vegetables, rears stingless bees for medicinal honey, and makes its own fruit wines. After viewing the spectacular farm and have a delicious lunch, you will drive back to Gangtok or onto your next destination.
