Gangtok is a bustling town where tourists can enjoy local tourist spots, food, and a wonderful view of Mt. Khangchendzonga.
A local sightseeing tour encompasses visiting several waterfalls, viewpoints, and Buddhist sites.
Gangtok was first established as a Buddhist pilgrimage site, and today it remains an important Buddhist center. To get an insight into Buddhism in Sikkim, a visit to Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is a must. The exhibits inside the museum give you a glimpse into Tibetan culture, previous rulers of Sikkim, and Buddhist practices. It also houses a library, which holds one of the largest collections of Tibetan works.
Just a short distance from here is Do Drul Chorten (stupa). Situated on a hillock, the golden dome of the stupa can be seen from various locations in Gangtok. Inside the stupa are religious books and objects. Surrounding the stupa are 108 prayer wheels.
Close to Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is the ropeway. The short ride, which takes you from Deorali Bazar to Tashiling Secretariat, offers a beautiful view of Gangtok town. MG Marg market is within walking distance from here.
Gangtok sightseeing is incomplete without visiting Banjakri Falls and Bakthang Falls. Tourists can dress up in traditional costumes and have their picture taken here.
Other interesting points that are included in the tour are visits to Tashi View Point, Ganesh Tok, and Hanuman Tok. Tashi View Point offers a spectacular view of Mt. Khangchendzonga. This spot is best visited in the morning to view the sunrise.
