Engulfed with greenery from all sides, Assam is one of the most beautiful states of India. Nestled in the North-Eastern part of India, Assam is home to the mighty Brahmaputra River, the spiritual Kamakhya Temple, attractive landscapes, the famous Kaziranga National Park, and many others. The state is also popular for its rich historic culture, which also includes the influence of the Ahom dynasty.
Let’s take a look at some of the popular historic spots of Assam.
Rang Ghar in Sivasagar
Located in Sivasagar, Rang Ghar is one of the classic examples of Ahom architecture and is still standing tall. Tracing back to when the Ahom dynasty ruled Assam, Rang Ghar was believed to be the house of entertainment for the Ahom royals. Thus, this monument is a major historical site of Assam.
Talking about its architecture, it is a two-storied building, which was constructed during the rule of King Swargadeo Pramatta Singha. Many kinds of activities including various sports were witnessed here. If you are planning to visit Assam, Rang Ghar should be on your check-list.
The best time to visit Rang Ghar is October and November.

Located in the western region of Guwahati, Kamakhya Temple is one of the most popular holy places of Assam. The temple has an intense history associated with it. It has a beautiful design and a huge dome, which makes it worth a visit.

Talatal Ghar in Sivasagar
Another magnificent monument of the Ahom dynasty is the Talatal Ghar, which is located in Sivasagar. It vividly depicts the rich Assamese culture and is a must-visit place for all those who love to watch inspirational and creative architecture.
What fascinates me about Talatal Ghar is that it is believed to have three underground floors and two secret passages, which were earlier used for war purposes. Another interesting fact about Talatal Ghar is the kind of cement being used for the construction of the monument, which is rice powder and swans’ eggshells. Isn’t that amazing?

Agnigarh is a small hill situated in the middle of Tezpur town of Sonitpur district, Assam. This site is famous for the historical love story of Usha and Aniruddha. According to historical facts, this hillock was covered with fire by Usha’s father from all sides to restrain her from meeting Aniruddha. Thus, Usha was kept away from Aniruddha in Agnigarh by her father. However, this site has turned out to be a very popular tourist destination. There are seats for people to spend some time on the hill and enjoy the spectacular view of greenery all around.

With an eminent 600 years of rule, the Ahom dynasty plays a very important role in Assamese history. Apart from being the capital of the Ahom kingdom, it is also famous for a collection of maidams which are the burial ground of the Ahom royalty. This ground consists of 42 tombs of the kings and queens who died in that period. The main spot of the place is the floral design done on the underground dome, and each of these domes is covered with mounds. This reflects the grandeur and vision of the Ahoms!
