Mawlynnong – Asia’s Cleanest Village located in Northeast India
Cleanliness is not a chore but a way of life in Mawlynnong Village, located in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya in Northeast India.
All houses in the village have functional toilets since 2007. Bamboo dustbins are kept in place all over the village, so much so that even the dry leaves that have fallen from the trees go straight into the eco-friendly dustbins. Plastic bags are banned and smoking is also prohibited. The rules are to be followed strictly and any such defaulters are charged heavily.
In addition, Mawlynnong also gets its own manure, which is converted from the garbage that has been dug into a pit. Apart from cleaning their own houses, people also step out to sweep the roads. Planting trees whenever they can is a part of their lifestyle here too.
