Located at Jarain, in Amlarem subdivision of War-Jaintia region amid the natural habitat of the carnivorous pitcher plant -- Nepenthenes Khasiana spreads over an area of 50,000 square meters. A pretty lake sits placidly amid graveled footpaths, arch bridges, pitcher plant garden and green house -interpretation center. A pitcher plant replica in the middle of the lake doubles up as a fountain - the setting is perfect for a leisurely boat ride. There are paddle-boats to engage visitors as they soak in the greenery of the low lying hillocks around. Four boats have been provided and the lake is attracting a lot of visitors from far and near.
Jarain Pitcher Plant Lake
This lake is unique as it is completely cut out artificially and yet very well maintained by the authorities. Jarain Pitcher Plant Lake gets its name from the pitcher garden that surrounds it. It was built by the Government of Meghalaya (Soil and Water Conservation Department). The lake is conveniently located on the Jowai-Amlarem Road. It enhances the look of the entire place as everything from the boat-house to the fountain in the centre of the lake has been made to depict the symbolizing pitcher plant. The lake consists of a greenhouse, an arched bridge and gravelled pathways.
On a beautiful day, the placid waters perfectly reflect the image of the nearby hillocks. The Jarain Pitcher Plant Lake is also an ideal place for bird watchers as a number of migratory birds flock these areas. The best time to visit this place is between November-June by a booked taxi from Shillong.
This is a popular place to visit for the locals and tourists alike. One can hire a taxi from Jowai which is 25 kms through National Highway 206 via Jarain village. One should stop at this point while going towards Dawki from Jowai.
