Lumbini is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Rupandehi District in Nepal. It is the place where, according to Buddhist tradition, Queen Mahamayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in 563 BCE. Gautama, who achieved Enlightenment sometime around 528 BCE, became the Buddha and founded Buddhism.

Lumbini is one of many magnets for pilgrimage that sprang up in places pivotal to the life of the Buddha. Lumbini was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

(1) Ashoka Pillar: The Lumbini Pillar inscription, also called the Paderia inscription, is an inscription in the ancient Brahmi script, discovered in December 1896 on a pillar of Ashoka in Lumbini, modern Nepal by Alois Anton Führer.

(2) Bodhi Tree in Lumbini: The tree covered in prayer flags situated just beside the pond. People come here to make wishes in hope of them becoming true. They tie a flag around the tree per wish. The place is very peaceful and people generally do meditation there.

(3) China Temple: This Chinese temple is very beautiful and always has many tourists around it. There is a beautiful Buddha statue sitting in peace. Monks can be seen meditating in a room. It is also known as Zhong Hua Chinese Buddhist Monastery.

(4) Dharma Swami Maharaja Buddha Vihar: This is a Tibetan-styled Gompa. It was built by His Eminence Chogya Trichen Ringboche and Raja of Mustang. Tara Puja is conducted every day by the 60 monks who reside there.

(5) Lumbini Museum: This museum is the world’s first state-of-the-art museum of Buddhism. Housed in a 1970’s vaulted brick structure designed by the world-famous Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, the building is now being restored and reimagined for a contemporary experience.

(6) Maya Devi Temple: Is an ancient Buddhist temple situated at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini, Nepal. It is the main temple at Lumbini, a site traditionally considered the birthplace of Gautama Buddha. The temple stands adjacent to a sacred pool (known as Puskarni) and a sacred garden.

(7) The Myanmar Golden Temple: This is one of the oldest structures in Lumbini. There are three prayer halls – the most impressive is topped by a corncob-shaped shikhara (tower), styled after the temples of Bagan. Within the temple grounds nearby is the Lokamani Pula Pagoda, a huge gilded stupa in the southern Burmese style, inspired by the Shwedagon Paya in Yangon.

(8) Lumbini Shanti Stupa/Peace Pagoda: The Peace Pagoda was constructed by Nipponzan Myohoji monks and dedicated in November 2001 at the Buddhist pilgrimage site in Kapilvastu district Lumbini zone Nepal, where Queen Mayadevi is said to have given birth to Siddhartha Gautama, who in turn, as the Buddha Gautama, gave birth to the Buddhist tradition.
