A seven- hour drive from Gangtok will take you to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary at the heart of Yumthang Valley in North Sikkim. Located at a height of 13,200ft, the sanctuary sprawls across 43 sq. km crisscrossed by the picturesque Yumthang River. Surrounding the sanctuary are hills draped in blooming bushes and topped by snow peaks.
In April – May, the sanctuary breaks into a riot of colours, offering a stunning bouquet of 40 species of Rhododendrons, varieties of primulas and other captivating alpine trees and flowers. Amidst this floral feast, spotted a serow, Goral, Blood Pheasant, Common hill Partridge or the highly endangered spotted linsang might make your visit all the more memorable.
