Nagaland State produces around 22,000 MT of spices every year with the area used for cultivation of spices is approx 6,000 hectares. From flavoring the favorite curries to curing several ailments, spices have hold a special place in Naga lives and is a must in every Nagaland kitchen. Nagaland holds a distinctive position owing to its unique, quality spices. Nagaland spices are flavorsome to add in food and are widely used in home remedies too.
Major Spices of Nagaland:
Naga Morich- The Naga chili, locally known as Naga Morich, is a chili pepper cultivated in Northeast India and Bangladesh. It is one of the hottest known chilli peppers, and is closely related to the Bhut jolokia.
Bhut Jolokia (Raja Mircha)- The Bhut Jolokia is also known as ghost pepper, ghost chili pepper, ghost chili and ghost jolokia. It is an inter-specific hybrid chili pepper cultivated in the Northeast Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland and Manipur as well as in Nepal. It is a hybrid of Capsicum Chinense and Capsicum.
Ginger- Zingiber (Ginger)is commonly found in Peren and Dimapur district. This is more spicy than normal ginger.
Turmeric- Turmeric is the highest produced spice in Nagaland. It is distributed to various parts of India along with Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Apart from these spices, Cardamom, Black Pepper, Bay Leaf, Fennel and Black Cumin are also grown on large scale here.
