The Grotto locally known as Gerato is one of the peaceful place situate in the St Mary’s hill of Kurseong a subdivision in the district of Darjeeling in West Bengal. The place is just 4 kilometers away from Kurseong located in the middle of the thick forest and it is a must visit place. The Grotto of St Mary’s Hill is constructed in a Replica of Lady of Lourdes, France and it is one of the tourists’ attractions of Kurseong. This is also one of the famous pilgrimages sites where the people of all the religion visits the place with great respect and honour and they offer a pray and light the candles so that their wishes are fulfilled. It is also believed that the statue of Virgin mother Mary has the divine power to fulfill all the wishes and capable of healing the diseases. It is a scenic area covered with lush green forests all around, and the way leading to it is equally enthralling. St. Mary’s Hill also has a newly-built church of St. John. After the place was declared as the 7th pilgrimage places by one of the Bishop the place gained more popularity and as per the locals it is believed that the Grotto of St Mary’s Hill was constructed by the Britishers and it is almost more than 160 years. The peaceful location of Grotto evokes a deep sense of faithfulness and worship. Inside the cave like structure made of stones the beautiful statue of Virgin Mary is placed and the divine cross of Jesus is places in another cave. The natural spring beside the cave is regarded as a holy water and as per the legends the water brought from the Lady of the Lourdes, France has been mixed in the water of the spring. Many locals and the tourists visit the place and the view of the surrounding hills and the mountains is breathtaking. The view of the sunset from the hill is really mesmerizing.
