One of the important sites in the northeastern state of Agartala is the Pilak archaeological site which is located in the Santribazar subdivision of South Tripura district and the distance from Agartala the capital city of Tripura to Pilak is almost 114 kilometers. In the archaeological site of Pilak there are many belongings, images, and structures of Buddhist and Hindu sects and it is also one of the important and famous archaeological sites of Tripura.
Since the year of 1927 the Pilak archaeological site was discovered it is believed and said that the antiquities found in Pilak archaeological site are dated to 8th to 12th centuries. The number of rock-cut images and terracotta plaques are lying scattered in various places of the area. Sandstone sculptures of the Pilak site, which represent a heterodox culture of Hinduism and Buddhism of the 9th to 13th century, are on display at the Tripura Government Museum. The Pilak archaeological site is said to be the part of a series of archaeological sides of Bangladesh which includes Mainamati and Somapura Mahavihara. In a historical Bengal the Pilak archaeological site used to be a part of the Samatata kingdom. The Pilak archaeological site represents both Hinduism and Buddhism archaeological sites and in both, the testimony is peaceful co-existence of the two cultures. In Hinduism t represents Shiva, Surya, Baishnabi, and Buddhism, it represents Hinayana, Mahayana, and Bajrayana.
To reach Agartala one can go by air, train, or by road, all the modes of transportation are easily accessible. The nearest airport to reach Agartala is Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya airport of Agartala and the nearest railway station is Garjee. Agartala Railway station is also very near to the city and it is at a distance of a few kilometers to the south from the city center and also it is connected to a number of cities.
