The Lepcha museum of Kalimpong in West Bengal is one of the best places to learn about the culture and heritage of Lepcha community and it was founded in the year of 1985 by Shri Sonam Tshering Lepcha a receiver of Padmashree, Banga Bhushan and plentiful award for folk song and dance.
The old man is the one who single-handedly runs the Lepcha school and the museum, he gives all the information of the Lepcha community and the culture to the visitors and he also entertains the visitors by playing various kinds of music since he himself is a wonderful musician. He personally guides the visitors, plays folk tunes. The museum is an endeavour of Sonam Lepcha who started with collection of articles used by the Lepchas for their ceremonies and day to day use. Over the years this place has gain a reputation for being one of the best places to learn about the Lepcha community. The original inhabitant of the area the Lepchas or Rong as they call themselves have a unique cultural heritage. The museum is an effort to preserve and illustrate their culture and tradition.
The Lepcha museum is located very close from the town of Kalimpong, it is almost 1 kilometre away from the bus stand of Kalimpong town, the museum displays various original Lepcha music instruments, articles of worship, handicraft items and manuscripts, each and every single piece in the museum reflects and illustrates the culture, tradition and life of Lepcha community. The Lepcha museum of Kalimpong is one of the best places for the one who have an interest in studying heritage and old collections of the Lepcha community. One can also visit the Gompa which is just below the Lepcha museum and it is worth a look. One can visit the Lepcha museum throughout the year, except Sunday the museum is open from morning 10:00 AM to evening 4:30 PM from Monday to Friday and on Saturday the museum is open from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. It is easily accessible from the town of Kalimpong which is the nearest town.
