Shangphan Wildlife Sanctuary is also known as Shingphan or Singphan Willdlife Sanctuary. Some of the forests in Mon are Shingphan forest, Wanching forest, Tiru forest, Zangkhum forest, Shawot and Chen forests, Yei, Monyakshu, Pessao, Yongkao and Tobu forests. These forests are rich in timber. The rare Blue Vanda, White Orchids, Foxtail, Wild Lilies, Maples etc. are found in the mountainous region of the District.
Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary
There are varieties of medicinal herbs, edible plants, shrubs, and plants etc., which are of great botanical value. Elephant, Tigers, Spotted Leopards, Jungle Cats, Mithuns, Hornbills, and Partridge fowls, the rare Tragopan, Barking Deer, Mountain Goats, Wild Boars, Bears are found in the forest of the Mon District.
Nagaland government has declared Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary as Singphan Elephant Reserve with the approval of the union government on August 16, 2018. The Singphan Elephant Reserve is the 30th Elephant Reserve in India.
The declaration of the Singphan Elephant Reserve is expected to boost the elephant conservation in the country especially northeastern region. As per recent census report (2017) Nagaland has around 446 elephants. The creation of new Elephant Reserve will result in protection and conservation of the elephants. Nagaland Government declared Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary as an elephant reserve. The Elephant Reserve spreads over an area of 5825 acres.
It is strategically located in contiguity with the Abhaypur Reserve Forest of Assam. The entry to Wildlife Sanctuary starts from sunrise and closes till sunset. Also it is open daily except on Sundays.
