Workation (work +
vacation) is becoming quite the trend lately and more and more people are
opting for an extended stay in the hills because the appeal is just too strong
to resist.
Charming secluded
stays in the midst of nature, Wi-Fi, ready meals, jolly conversations with the
locals (or the stray dog or goat), and numerous opportunities to meet with strangers
or go off on your own are the many reasons the free-spirited are flocking to
the hills.
Why Sikkim is an ideal destination
It takes a plane or
train ride to Siliguri in West Bengal and then 4 hours more by car before you
finally plant your feet in Sikkim. This
distance in itself is what makes Sikkim an ideal destination as it avoids the
usual rush of tourists who are looking for one-stop landings.
There are plenty of homestays in Sikkim that are open for short and long stays. Some homestays are converted homes or hotels close to the commercial city of Gangtok, while others are set amidst rural locations overlooking terraced paddy fields, farms, and rolling hills and valleys. The choice between modern and traditional is yours for the taking. All the homestays provide basic amenities and meals. Wi-Fi is mostly available in modern homestays but a dongle is needed for the remote locations (which is totally worth the hassle once you land there).

Spoilt for Choice
Each district of Sikkim offers different kinds of homestay, environment, and activities. In East Sikkim, homestays are generally modern. Homestays come with a clean room, desk, Wi-Fi, and meals. Evenings can be spent at the market where you can relax at the numerous cafes or enjoy the cacophony of shoppers after a quiet day of work. Reserve the weekends for excursions to different waterfalls, lakes, and streams and also cycle/bike rides.
West Sikkim is where
you’ll find some of the most traditional homes in the state, from the original
wooden structures and painted windows and doorposts to decorative ram horns, notched tree trunks for ladders, and traditional mud kitchens. There are a lot
of cardamom plantations, orange farms, and trout farms found here. Apart from
acres of farmland, pine trees, and streams, there are not many “touristy”
places for sightseeing, unless you are in Pelling (there's quite a bit to see there), so a good hike and smoking trout for dinner should do the
job for weekend relaxation.

Homestays in Pelling are cosy and peaceful
Enjoy the tea gardens of South Sikkim with homestays close to the famous Temi Tea Garden. Most of the homestays have pretty farms on their property where you can dive into some gardening or picking veggies for dinner. A walk along the long winding roads is pretty awesome too. Temi Tea Garden has some fun activities like ziplining, cycling, and paragliding you can try out during the weekends.
North Sikkim is on
the remote side and needs a special permit to enter but it provides the right
kind of isolation and scenic charm that will make you look forward to getting
out of bed every morning. The cosy
hamlets of Dzongu and Lachen are good places to settle in as they have good
internet connectivity. Hikes and treks in different valleys and national parks,
a stroll around the local market, visiting monasteries, and whiling away your
time staring at basically nature make up your weekend activities. You can take
a special trip to Gurudongmar Lake.
