Perched on a hilltop facing the city of Gangtok, the monastery complex at Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre embodies the vision and aspiration of the sixteenth Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, to establish his seat-in-exile to help spread the teachings of the Buddha throughout the world.
Located just a half a kilo meter away from Dharma Chakra Centre is the original Rumtek Monastery, which was founded by fourth Chhogyal Gyurmed Namgyal in 1734 A.D. and is regarded as one of the major Kagyupa monasteries in East Sikkim.
10 mins drive from the Old Rumtek Monastery is the village of Martam, this is a typical Bhutia village with its terraced paddy fields and orange orchards. Besides relaxing and unwinding in village Martam has a monastery and trails into leading into the Fambanglo Wildlife Sanctuary.
5 mins drive from the Rumtek Dharma Centre is the Jawahar Lal Nehru Botanical garden. This garden is treasure house for nature lovers and has a collection of indigenous plants from the Sikkim Himalayas.
