Overview Overview

Location Overview:

Kohima was the battle ground of the war which took place between the Japanese and British forces. The Nagas played an important role in what’s coined as the battle of Kohima. There are a few sites that pay homage to the soldiers who fought in the war.

Imphal, the capital of Manipur, is known for its scenic landscapes but it too faced the harsh reality of war during the Battle of Imphal.

Kohima Battlefield Sightseeing

  • The latter part of the day involves a visit to the Battle of Kohima Museum in Kisama, besides trying to spot as many of the different war memorials scattered around Kohima as possible. The length of the tour can be varied, depending on the time available.
  • Overnight stay in Kohima.
Kohima - Imphal

  • After breakfast check out from the Hotel and proceed to Imphal.
  • Situated in a beautiful valley, Imphal is surrounded by bluish-green hills on three sides. The Kangla Fort, at the heart of the city, was the seat of the ancient Manipuri Kingdom for an estimated 2,000 years.
  • One of the most important historical sites in Manipur, the over 200-acre Kangla Fort Complex is today an oasis of calm in an ever busier city.
  • Nearby is the Mapal Kangjeibung, arguably the world’s oldest polo ground where the game is still played, and a reminder that modern Polo originated in Manipur.
  •  Khwairamband Keithel, or Ima Market, said to be among the largest such markets in Asia run exclusively run by women.
  • Imphal’s environs were also the scene of bitter fighting between Allied (British) forces and the Axis Forces (Japanese and the Indian National Army) during the World War II. Indeed, the Battle of Imphal of 1944- together with the Battle of Kohima- is today recognized as Britain’s Greatest Battle and as Japan’s greatest ever defeat on land.
  • Overnight stay in Imphal.
Imphal Battlefield Seightseeing

  • Breakfast at the Hotel. Proceed for day tour of Imphal. The Battle of Imphal Tour is a guided tour that covers sites in and around the city related to the Battle of Imphal and Manipur’s overall War experience. This includes (among others): a Second World War-era airfield (Koirengei or Imphal Main), two War cemeteries and a battlefield (Nunshigum). Take this tour to find out just why the UK's National Army Museum named Imphal/Kohima as Britain's Greatest Battle in April 2013 and to hear, for once, Manipur's side of the story.
  • Overnight stay in Imphal.
