The Sandakphu Trek is a moderate trek and is ideal for beginners. The trail is mostly even ground and on motorised roads, but there are a few steep inclines on the trail that run within the national park that can test your endurance.
The Sandakphu trek takes you to an altitude of 11,900 ft and can take between 3-5 days to complete. Hence, it’s important that you equip yourself with the right trekking essentials for a comfortable trek.
WHAT TO WEAR
Trek pants: Choose light durable ones that can stretch and provide enough comfort during the trek. Polyamide or high polyester blends are both durable materials and highly comfortable. You can choose either the regular trekking pants or convertible trekking pants, but don’t spend more than Rs 2500 on trek pants as trekking is a minimalist sport.
Trek boots: While hiking shoes can do the job, it’s not ideal for long distances and high altitudes. Therefore, we suggest you invest in trek boots, which provide both support and stability, thereby saving you from any possible foot injury. If you’re buying new ones, make sure they fit well. You can go for a slightly larger size to give you enough foot room. Note: Make sure to break into them atleast 2 weeks before the trek.
Thick socks: Your daily socks will not do, especially when worn with trekking shoes. Wear socks with medium/heavy cushioning. This will give you the needed insulation, warmth, and comfort during the trek.
Light jacket: Carry a light jacket which will be helpful as you keep ascending and during the evenings.
Hat: Never underestimate the effects of the sun. As you will be walking on motorable roads on most parts of the trek, hats will provide the needed protection from the heat when you’re not protected by tree covers.
Inner thermal wear: The nights will be cold, so carry 2 pairs of inner thermals.
WHAT TO CARRY
Backpack: An ideal backpack needs to be sturdy, lightweight, compact, adequately padded, enough compartments, and convenient to carry. A 60L backpack should be enough to carry you through this trek.
Trek pole: While trek poles help greatly on uneven trails, they are as useful on level surfaces as well. They decrease pressure on the knees and can be easily collapsed and tucked into your backpack.
Water bottle: We are against the use of plastic bottles, which you can buy at numerous stalls that fall along the route, so carry a sustainable water bottle that you can fill at any of the springs along the route.
Medical kit: Carry basic necessities such as bandages, cotton swabs, scissor, medical tape, ORS, Volini spray, and medication for altitude sickness.
Sunblock: It’s always helpful to slap on a bit of sunblock when outdoors.
Personal toiletries kit: Towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap,
Energy snacks: Chocolate bars, granola bars, dried fruits, nuts, and seeds.
