Mizoram is one of the northeastern states of India. It is a landlocked state and is bordered by Assam, Manipur, and Tripura. Mizoram’s topography consists of undulating hills, valleys, lakes, and rivers. There are 21 major hill ranges or peaks in Mizoram. This dramatic and captivating landscape along with Mizoram’s pleasant climate have deemed Mizoram a
Mizoram has a total of 125 cities. The 5 major tourist cities of Mizoram include Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram; Champhai; Khawbung; Lunglei; and Thenzawl.
Aizawl is the largest city in Mizoram and is located in the northern part of Mizoram. The city is lively and bustling with activity, especially since it’s the centre of all government offices. It has a lot of tourist attractions such as Solomon’s Temple, Mizoram State Museum, and Berawtlang Tourist Complex. An interesting place is Baktawng Village, where the world’s largest family lives (180 members).
Thenzawl is a beautiful town situated in the center of Mizoram. Thenzawl has many wonderful natural attractions such as Vantawng Falls, Chawngchilhi Puk (cave), Tuirihiau Falls, and Thenzawl Deer Park.
Lunglei is an urban town in Mizoram. It first piqued the interest of tourists because of a natural bridge made of stones present there. Lunglei means Stonebridge. Interesting places to see here are Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary, Kawmzawl Park, Zobawk Sports Academy, and Saikuti Hall.
Champhai is a border town in Mizoram. The altitude at which the town is situated gives commanding views of the hill ranges of Myanmar. Some of the popular places to visit include Murlen National Park, Rih Dil (lake), Mura Pak (a site with 6 caves), and the historical village of Chawngtlai.
Khawbung is a sub town in Champhai district. It holds many historic and heritage sites. Places of interest include Mizo Hlakungpui Mual—a monument to commemorate Mizo poets, Puanvawrh Puk (a natural cave near the foot of a cliff), Kawtchhuah Ropui—where there are a cluster of megaliths, and Dungtlang—an interesting archeological site.
Transportation in Mizoram
Mizoram has a state transport corporation with buses running throughout the state. However, these are quite cramped. Other ways to travel are by sumo and minibus, which run between all towns and cities.
You can also opt for taxis that ply between cities and also around Mizoram’s countryside.
If you can splurge a bit on transportation then we suggest you rent a cab everywhere in Mizoram.
How to reach Mizoram
By rail
Mizoram is connected through National Highway 54 from Silchar, Assam.
By train
Mizoram is connected through its rail head in Bairabi in Kolasib District. However, the track ends at Bairabi and you need to take another transportation to reach your destination.
By air
Mizoram has only one airport—Lengpui Airport. Lengpui Airport is a domestic airport located in Aizawl, Mizoram. Lengpui Airport is the first airport in the country. The airport was built by the State Government. Lengpui Airport is 32 km away from Aizawl.
Lengpui Airport has a table top runway and is among the only 3 such airports in India. The airport has a 2500 meter long runway. What is unique about the airport’s runway is that it has many hilly streams running beneath it.
Landing on this airport’s runway is no easy task. The table top runway of Lengpui Airport creates an optical illusion that requires a very precise approach from the pilot. There has been a mishap recorded at this airport. Pilots who operate from this airport (and all such hilly terrain airports) need clearance as per DGCA regulations. Progressively, Lengpui Airport has installed Cat-I Instrument Landing System, which will help planes land safely at the airport during low visibility conditions.
