Do you know what an educational tour is? Luckily for schoolers, it’s a break from the monotony of classroom teaching. Let me give you a brief introduction about educational tours. The primary purpose of an educational tour is to educate students by providing them with a chance to learn from out-of-class experiences in an informal setting. Through this, they gain a new perspective of looking at things and applying it in their life. In addition to this, a school tour allows students to develop close bonds with teachers and classmates. Travel and education are two wonderful aspects that both blend well together.
Last year, TourGenie organized an amazing educational tour for class 10 students of Kyi-De-Khang Secondary School. The day trip was organised to familiarise students with paddy cultivation using traditional farming methods and get a hands-on experience of paddy sowing. This gave the students a chance to experience life in the field and sow paddy with their own hands.
The school buses started from Gangtok at around 7:30am and headed to Aho Village in Pakyong Tehsil, East Sikkim. On arrival, students and teachers were greeted by members of TourGenie and given a quick introduction. It was a very new kind of activity for the students and the students were very obliging.
After the short briefing, the students were taken to the club house where they refreshed themselves with a welcome drink and again given a briefing on the day’s activities. We introduced them to Mr. Shanti who works for a company called International Panaacea Ltd, which is involved in monitoring organic farming and use of technology in traditional farming in Sikkim. The students were about to do paddy sowing on his farm.
After this brief session, students were instructed to change into comfortable clothes to get inside the field. We divided the 53 students into groups and accordingly took them in to the field.
After they reached the field, Mr. Shanti distributed the saplings among them and they started to sow in the field. The students really enjoyed the activity. It was a very new experience for them to get inside the slush and mud and do paddy sowing.
After a fun and eye-opening experience, the students cleaned up and proceeded for lunch, which was arranged in one of the local houses. As a reward for their brilliant efforts in the field and as a token of recognition, each student and teachers were given a new sapling from the TourGenie team to take home with a message to be a responsible traveller.
The trip was not over yet as we planned another stopover at an integrated model organic farm in Saramsa. Here, the students were given a walking tour of the farm, where they learnt about animal husbandry, rainwater harvesting, organic manure processing, vegetable farming, vermi composting and much more.
Everyone had a great time at the end of the day, with many of them admitting that they had learnt so much by just having fun and also being able to easily relate their lessons with the real world through the day’s activities. Students left with a deeper understanding of the different aspects of organic farming such as the preparation of the fields, seasonal sowing and harvesting, and farming methods and implementation.
TourGenie’s goal is to make sure every class trip is easy for participating teachers, fun and memorable for students, and worry-free for parents whose children tour with us. We make sure everything in the tour starts perfectly and ends perfectly.
