Aalo is a small village in Arunachal Pradesh, situated 240 km from Dibrugarh. The majority of tribal people here follow Donyi-Polo religion. The name Donyi-Polo means Sun-Moon. The followers of Donyi-Poloism worship a variety of gods that enliven nature. It is believed that they take care of the earth and humanity. Talom Rukbo is the father of Donyi-Polo religion. He expressed the need for institutionalization of the traditional faith. Hence, he established Donyi Polo temple in Aalo in the year 1989.
The temple is a centre for worshipping the sun and the moon. It is one of the 400 centers of Arunachal Pradesh that propagates the ancient religion Donyi Poloism. This is among the biggest Donyi-Polo temples in state. The temple is situated nearby the village and can be visited any day of the week. Locals mainly visit on Sundays for prayers. They visit here well dressed up with families, and enjoy the religious hymns. Hence, tourists can visit on Sunday to see local culture too.
Locals call Sunday prayer Gangging. Gangging members have to follow certain rules like male members must sit on the left in rows, and female members on the right, cross-legged. During the prayer, there should not be any noise except the sound of the hymns.
Along with the prayer room, Donyi Polo Temple has a meditation hall too. One can take part in the meditation program organized by Temple. It can be a wonderful experience praying and mediating here in serene and calm location.
Tourists visit the Temple throughout the year. However, try to avoid coming in monsoons as roads are not good during rains. One can hire a cab from Pasighat or Dibrugarh to reach here. Else, State Tourism buses are also available from both cities on fixed times. Donyi Polo Temple is a major thing to do in Aalo.
