Meghalaya, fondly called the abode of clouds, is a beautiful state dotted with rolling hills, vast green covers, and glistening waterfalls. The capital Shillong is known as the Scotland of the East because of the weather and landscape closely resembling the Scottish highlands. This hilly northeastern state is also home to Cherrapunjee and Mawsynram- the wettest places on this planet, making it a must visit place.
When visiting here, there are many places of tourist interest which are spoken about on different platforms, so I want to spell out a few different ones. Depending on what kind of travel you would like to embark on, you can choose to visit any/all of the following places:
1. For the culturally inclined traveller
If you like culture and want to soak in some city vibes then Shillong is the place to go to. The iconic Elephant Falls, Wankhar Entomology Museum, Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, and Umiam Lake are all in and around Shillong. The Cherry Blossom Festival also takes place here during November each year. The week to 10-day long festival features a number of events such as a guided night walk beneath illuminated cherry blossoms, a fashion show, live music gigs, and a variety of stalls showcasing the region’s cuisine, art and craft, and wine. Don’t miss a visit to You & I café where you get a close glimpse of and can experience Khasi culture through the food, ambience, musical instruments, and board games such as Khasi chess.

2. For the adventure loving traveller
If you love adventure then don’t miss out on Dawki, a beautiful river about 3 hours from Shillong that is famous for its crystal clear waters. There are hour-long boat rides that can carry upto 3 people available there. This is a great place to click perfect pictures. Another popular spot is Umngot, which is very close to Dawki and is a haven for adventure sports like scuba diving, rock climbing, kayaking etc. along with riverside camping.

3. For the world explorers and wanderers
If you lean on the exploring side then there are beautiful trekking options like the David Scott and Double Decker trails that will take you into Cherrapunji. There you can also see the famous Living root bridge, the limestone caves of Mawsmai, and the Seven Sister falls.
Again, If you like visiting interesting places then don’t miss the cleanest village in Asia–Mawlynnong (very close to the Living root bridge), the very unique whistling village of Kongthong, and the Monoliths at Narithang Village, which has an interesting story.
