Kathok lake is located in the middle of Yuksom village, named after the acclaimed Lama Kathok Kuntu Zangpo. This lake is considered to be very holy and annual prayers are offered to maintain the sacredness and purity of the lake. The entire area of the lake is surrounded by lush forest of Himalayan Chestnuts and Alnus trees.
Kartok lake is a serene place to visit with lots of greeneries all around. The reflections of the Tibetan prayer flags on the still green water make a lovely enchanting view. The lake has a lot of colorful fishes which comes up time to time for breathing.
It is located on the way to coronation throne and Goechela Trekking trail. It is the best place to remain in solitude savoring the beauty of the lake. On clear day the reflection of Mount Kabru is also visible in the lake waters. This lake is considered as the "mother lake" in local folklore.
Lamas perform Tru-sol or purification ceremony every year to retain its sanctity. A newly restored monastery named as ‘Kathok Wosel Ling’ is located above this lake.
