One of the most viral places in recent times, thanks to TikTok, is Gundu in Bhaktapur, also known as Gundu Greenland. I was fascinated and totally captivated by the beautiful scenery of the place as seen in TikTok videos and even in some Instagram stories. Being an avid traveller myself, I find immense pleasure exploring the least explored places and that explorer in me was in chains amidst COVID lockdown. The video of Gundu and its lush green grassland served as a relief and was key to breaking that chain. I was planning to go there with friends but as none of my friends were free and I could wait no longer, I decided to travel solo—my first solo travel after the lockdown was lifted.

Hills of Gundu

Gundu lies in the southern part of Bhaktapur. Only if you are a nature freak will you understand the impeccable and immeasurable beauty of Gundu. It is an oasis of serenity amidst the bustling city. It is perfect for picnics as there are spaces all around to sit and enjoy the lush green grassland with a view of forested hills. There is also an artificial aircraft constructed by the Nepal Army for training purposes. This aircraft is one of the attractions of the place besides grassland and nature. People can be seen making videos and taking snaps with and inside the aircraft.

Getting There

Gundu lies in the Bhaktapur district beyond Suryabinayak jungle. To get there, you need to get to Suryabinayak. Public vehicles are available from Kathmandu Bus Park and Bhaktapur. It takes about an hour to reach Suryabinayak in public vehicles from Kathmandu, and from Bhaktapur, it takes about 10 minutes. If you have bikes then it takes about half an hour to reach Gundu via Suryabinayak.

It is about 10 km from Tribhuwan International Airport.

Places to visit around Gundu

Ghyampe Dada: Best known for a day hike in the valley and especially in Bhaktapur, Ghyampe Dada is one of the emerging destinations inside the valley. It takes about half an hour to hike from Gundu to Ghyampe Dada and you can witness the southern landscape and villages of Bhaktapur from here.

Pilot Baba Ashram: Along the lines of Ghyampe Dada lies yet another beautiful destination in Bhaktapur, Pilot Baba Ashram. It serves as a viewpoint and offers a panoramic view of the valley.

Ranikot: Another destination near Gundu is Ranikot. Considered one of the best hiking places inside Kathmandu Valley, Ranikot lies on the southern part of Bhaktapur. Similar to Gundu, it offers scenic views of snow-capped mountains, terraced farms, and incredible villages.
