Rang Ghar is one of the tourist attraction located near Rangpur Palace at a distance of almost 3 kilometres away from the historical town of Assam Sivasagar town. Rang Ghar is a name of translate to the house of entertainment and it was established in the year of 1746 AD during the Ahoms kingdom.
Rang Ghar is almost 3 kilometres away from the town Sivasagar and it is one of the important monuments edifice reflecting the architectural precision and grandeur of that time. The two-storied building the Rang Ghar was once served as the royal sports pavilion and during the time of Ahom Kingdom the Ahom Kings and nobles were the audience for the games like buffalo fights, elephant fights and other games, basically, it was built for the entertainment of the Ahom kingdoms.
Especially during the Rangauli Bihu festival, the royal sports pavilion was used to witness the games. Owing to its rich historical importance, Rang Ghar was used as a logo for the 33rd National Games held in Assam in the year of 2007. However, at present, the condition of this monument is quite fragile which is easily broken. Frequent earthquakes and seismic surveys have caused at least 35 noticeable cracks on the walls. Nevertheless, its splendour and magnificence make it worth the visit. The Rang Ghar is said to be one of the oldest surviving amphitheatres in Asia.
The Rang Ghar was first constructed with bamboo and wood during the reign of Swargadeo Rudra Singha and later in the year of 1744 to 1750 AD the building was rebuilt with brick by Swargadeo Pramatta Singha. This is a lovely monument and very well maintained.
