The small and beautiful village Takdah is located at an altitude of around 4000 feet which is approximately 28 kilometres away from the hills of queen “Darjeeling”. Originally it is called Tukdah and it is a Lepcha word for “mists” and “fog”, the beautiful village Takdak is quiet, serene and far enough to be isolated. The place is much cooler as compared to its surroundings although the altitude is much lower than the town Darjeeling. In the early 1900s during the British colonial days, Takdah started as a military cantonment and many of the senior British officers used to visit the place frequently since they have built the houses and the bungalows. Takdah extends a perfect and an extraordinary experience of exploring the offbeat destinations in Darjeeling Hills. There are many tea estates in Takdah like Jinglam, Poomong, Namring, Rungli Rungliot, Gielle and Teesta Valley estate; out of many tea estates in Takdah Rungli Rungliot are one of the prettiest and the most picturesque. The lush tea garden landscapes surrounded by mountains and Teesta flowing far below makes a stunning ambience.

One can also visit the factories of estate and watch the tea processing but during the winter seasons usually the factories remain closed. There are many places to see in and around Takdah, one of the must-visit place and the tourist destination are Takdah Orchid Centre, the Dechhen pema Tshoiling Monastery which is also known as Takdah Monastery and the Takdah monastery was built in the year of 1985. From the monastery one can see the awesome views of the Rungli Rungliot tea gardens, which actually mean “Thus far and no further”, the Teesta Valley tea estate and some tourist’s spots of Kalimpong like Durpin dara view point and etc. Takdah is almost 60 kilometers away from the nearest railway station New Jalpaiguri railway station and as well as from the Bagdogra airport which is the nearest airport. From both the places one can hire a cab or take a private vehicle to reach Takdah by road. The best time to visit Takdah is between October to March and during these months the weather remains cool, the sky remains clear and can enjoy the cool breeze of winter season.
