Samdrup Darjay Choling Monastery lies in Sonada between Ghoom and Kurseong. It is better known as a quaint stop on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. It is the main seat of the Shangpa Kagyu Lineage and is also known as Sonada Monastery. The monastery was founded by his eminence Dorjee Chang Kabje Kalu Rinpoche, who was born in Tibet in the year 1993.
It is said that the main shrine contains a mummified statue of the Vajradhara lama. Even if you do not find the shrine open, you can always take a walk around the premises. But tread gently through the sacred groves.
A valuable and rare thangka bearing the portrait of Jey Rimpoche was at this Buddhist Institute. The picture and the writing on it are of gold. The monastery is located on the national highway connecting Siliguri to Darjeeling.
