The Sela Lake or a Sela Pass is in the northern state of Arunachal Pradesh and the Sela Lake or the Sela Pass is located on the border between Tawang and West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh in India.
It is a high altitude mountain pass an elevation of around 4170m or 13,700 the Sela Lake is also a sacred site to the followers of Tibetan Buddhism and the people of Buddhism also believe that there are more sacred lakes in and around the pass. The Sela pass is well connected to Tawang and other places of India like Dirang, Guwahati, Tezpur, etc. it also carries a national highway 13 (NH 13) previously it was NH 229. Most of the time almost throughout the year the pass is covered with snow and during winters there is heavy snowfall and sometimes the Sela Pass is shut down temporarily due to road block. Sela Pass is opened throughout the year.
Sela Pass or Sela Lake is named after a tribal woman named Sela who used to bring food and water to an Indian Army named Jaswant Singh Rawant who fought alone against the Chinese Soldiers in the year 1962 in Sino- Indian war near the Pass and was dead. So when the tribal woman saw the dead body of the Indian Army Jaswant Sing Rawat she killed herself as said by the locals and the army. For the courage and devotion to duty the Indian army Jaswant Singh Rawant was awarded Maha Vir Chakra. On top of Sela Pass there is a twin Lake and the name f the lake is given as Sela Lake. The location and the view of the lake are eye-catching ones should definitely visit this lake while traveling to Zemithang, Tawang. The entire place is surrounded by natural beauty.
