Thadlaskein Lake is a man-made historical Lake in West Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya which is fed a perennial spring. It is also known as Pung Sajar Nangli locally. It is located 58 kms from East of Shillong, 17 kms South of Nartiang and 9 kms North of Jowai. It lies besides National Highway 6 (Shillong - Jowai Highway) by the side of a small village called Mukhla village.
According to tradition, one Chieftain Sajar Nangli had an irreconcilable difference with the King of Jaintiapur. Not wanting to be blamed for an inevitable bloodbath he decided to flee from the Kingdom with his followers. At a certain location they stopped for rest after their long day's journey. They began digging the ground on which they were sitting and resting upon with their bows and arrows edges and eventually it soon turned into a beautiful lake which is famous till today one of a huge lake in Meghalaya. The lake is revered by the people of Raid Mukhla who continue to offer sacrifices near the Lake. Also he was worshiped by a belonging community called Niamtre (a tribal religion in Meghalaya). The sacrifices were made once in a hundred years and were practiced by the ''Lyngdoh'' (a local indigenous priest) of the Niamtre community.
Thadlaskein Lake
The lake is surrounded by beautiful meadows and river Myntdu. Several types of rare orchids can also be seen here. The flora and fauna of the surrounding areas are absolutely breathtaking and a paradise for nature lovers. The green bushes and palm trees surrounding the lake enhance its beauty greatly. It is a popular picnic spot for locals. Boating is available here making it good hangout place. Some accommodations are also found here for tourists.
One can visit it in daytime and it there is no entry fee to the lake.
