Chatakpur Village situated within Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, the sanctuary with an area of 38.88 sq. km has an elevation of 1500 to 2600 m. Surrounded by high mountains Senchal receives a very heavy amount of precipitation. Such a water rich situation has made this Sanctuary the water supply source for Darjeeling Town.
Chatakpur village came into limelight for its pristine environment and unique location with majestic views of the mountains. It is at the altitude of 2400 meters and is one of the highest locations in Darjeeling district. It is about 80 kms from Siliguri and 25 kms from Darjeeling town.
One has to reach Sonada and take a Jeep/ Sumo/ Bolero to reach Chatakpur Village. The road from Sonada village is 7 kms, however, the path is not favorable for cabs like WagonR, Innova etc. At some point there are only boulder roads. The road is through the dense forest of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary.
Chatakpur
Chatakpur is an eco village with approx 100 people and 20 houses. Locals are mostly dependant on farming and tourists. There are homestays available with basic yet comfortable amenities. Most of the stays have Khangchendzonga Range View. One should take a 10 minutes walk to nearby watch tower to see mesmerizing Himalayan Ranges. Sunrise view from this point can be a memorable one for anyone.
This place is heaven for nature lovers and trekkers. Visitor can enjoy a comfortable stay along with the services of locals and encounter their cultures meanwhile. Snow capped peaks at the backdrop; anyone can spend a day watching them from this peaceful village. There are a lot of trails from here. But one should accompany a local guide as there are chances of confronting Himalayan bear or Leopard. On a lucky day one can see Red Panda too in nearby jungle.
