During the Second World War the historic Stilwell’s Road was constructed by the Allied Soldiers lead by America. The road well started from the Ledo, in Assam and it was connected to Kunming, China which was one of the railheads of the Bengal – Assam railway in Upper Brahmaputra to Burma Road. The roads were not in good condition due to the natural landscape and also due to lack of maintenance. Earlier the road was known as Ledo Road and later it was reconstructed under the direct supervision of American General Joseph Warren Stilwell in the year of 1945 and the road was named after his surname Stilwell. To construct of a connecting of the old Burma Road from Ledo, Assam, India to Burma was recommended by the Operation officer of General Joseph Warren Stilwell, Lieutenant Colonel Frank D. Merrill in order to provide land supply route into Burma for support of the Allied soldiers who were fighting the Japanese forces in North Burma and China. The road construction has begun in the year of December 1942 and they started constructing Hospitals, warehouses, Barracks, and road bases. The road was the overland connection between India and China and in the year of 1942 an alternate route was required after the Japanese cut off the Burma Road. Many American soldiers of about 15000 and local workers of around 35000 were involved in constructing the road and almost 60% of the American soldiers were African-Americans. During the construction of the roads many locals and the American soldiers more than 1100 lost their lives. After the Second World War the road disappears since there was no one to take care of and rebuilt the road and it was lost in the jungle. But in recent years the government of Burmese focused to reconstruct the road as an alternative to the existing Lashio-Kunming Burma Road. The tourism has begun near Pangsayu Pass and travel has improved since there was an improvement in the relationship between India and Myanmar on the other side of Burma the road is absolutely fine and at present the Nampong-Pangsau Pass section is passable in four-wheel-drive vehicles.
