Darjeeling is fondly known as the Queen of the Hills. It is a quaint hill station made famous in British time as the summer capital. Darjeeling is nestled at an altitude of approximately 6700 ft. above sea level in the eastern Himalayan foothills of the state of West Bengal. Darjeeling is very well known for its sunrise at Tiger Hill. Darjeeling offers an excellent view of the entire Himalayan range, especially the Khangchendzonga and Annapurna, and draws quite a crowd every year. The best time to visit Darjeeling is March-May. During this time, Darjeeling experiences optimum weather temperature-wise and is blessed with clear azure skies, which allow maximum visibility.
Darjeeling is blessed with a sub-tropical to temperate climate. The town is blessed with pleasant summers, and the temperature never rises higher than 25 °C.
Here is a brief look at temperatures in Darjeeling with respect to the different seasons
Spring: March and April constitute the spring season here in Darjeeling town when the weather becomes quite pleasant and the flora and fauna come alive. The temperatures during this season range from a low of 6°C to a high of 17°C. This is the best time to visit Darjeeling.
Summer: May to July is the period of summer in Darjeeling. The average temperature at this time ranges from 11°C to 24°C with a few days touching 25°C and a few moderate showers. In comparison, the lower plains of Darjeeling experience a temperate climate and record temperatures in the range of 25°C to 35°C. During this time, local festivals like Saga Dawa and Asar Ko Pandra are celebrated with pomp.
Monsoons: The months of June, July, and August make up the Monsoons in Darjeeling. The sky is mostly overcast with clouds on most days and the town experiences moderate to heavy showers. It is advisable not to travel to Darjeeling at this time as there are frequent landslides and heavy showers that make sightseeing pointless. Nevertheless, the tea gardens look stunning in this season. The temperatures remain below 20°C during this time.
Autumn: Mid-August marks the change in weather as temperatures take to the colder side. The real change in temperatures, however, starts in September and keeps progressing till November. This is also a great time to visit Darjeeling. The temperatures start falling below 15°C at this time and can go down to a low of 5°-6°C. The festivals of Teej and Vishwakarma Puja are celebrated during this time of the year.
Winter: From December onwards, the onset of winter begins. January and February are deemed the coldest months in Darjeeling. If you are really lucky, you can even experience a bit of snowfall during this time in the town itself. The usual temperature in the town ranges from a maximum of 10°C to a minimum of 2°C in December and is lower from Jan-Feb. If there is heavy snowfall in the peaks, the temperatures in Darjeeling can very well fall to sub-zero.
