The must visit places in the small town of Darjeeling is Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Rock Climbing Training Area or Tenzing Rock. The Tenzing rock is named after Tenzing Norgay, who was the first person to climb the Mt. Everest in the year of 1953 along with Edmund Hillary and made a history and the Tenzing rock is a gigantic natural rock. It is situated on Lebong Cart Road in Darjeeling of West Bengal. There are two rocks in Himalayan Mountaineering Institute the one named after Tenzing Norgay, the Tenzing rock which is on the left side and it is a huge rock in Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling and it is used for rock climbing training by the professional rock climbers and the trainees. Another rock is Gombu rock and both the rocks are face opposite to each other. Every year by the Indian Army the rock climbing competition is organized in Tenzing Rock and in the year of 2010 an army climber climbed the rock in 35 seconds and set a record. Many locals and the tourists visit the Tensing Rock to climb the rock and it is advisable to take help of the guides and pay some nominal fee if the climber is not experienced. The first time climbers can go with the small rock which is on the right hand side since the slope of the right face is gentle and surface is easier for climbing. But if the visitors see the left face of Tenzing rock looking over the fence on the road, one will likely to get a tremble in the backbone unless you are yourself a professional climber. The steep and almost vertical rock comes up from far below and raises high above the road level. It is not advisable to climb during or after monsoon season since the surface of the rocks get covered with slippery moss and it becomes difficult to climb although the moss is cleaned up. The Tenzing rock is opened throughout the year and it takes almost 20 minutes drive from the town Darjeeling. It is the must visit place during your visit to Darjeeling.
