Mawsmai Caves lies 6 km south from the main town of Cherrapunjee towards the road of Bangladesh border. This place is mostly called Krem Mawsmai - ‘Krem’ meaning ‘cave’ in Khasi, and ‘Mawsmai’ meaning ‘oath stone.’ It is a relatively easy cave for beginners to navigate. These limestone caves have the distinction of being the only caves in Meghalaya that are lit enough to enable tourists to enjoy the natural formations in awe.
The cave is 820 feet long and is lit up with halogen lamps. The caves are awe-inspiring, spine-tingling, and mysterious. Though the caves are long, only a distance of 150 meters is open for tourists, while the other section is closed. The entrance of the cave is big, but the walking area keeps on decreasing with the depth of the cave. In some places, people need to crawl or bend. The entrance and exit of the caves are different such that tourists can take a walk inside the caves and see naturally formed rocks. The exit is very narrow and needs skillful maneuvering to get out.
Mawsmai Caves
At the village crossing, one passes grasslands surrounded by forests, ending in a clearing. From this clearing, a concrete pathway through the jungle leads up to the main cave entrance. The stalactites and stalagmites caves are of innumerable forms, shapes, and sizes, leaving one to imagine as many life forms as possible. This magnificent natural wonder is the handiwork of years of natural abrasion and underground water. The caves are made of limestone, and the mysterious environment inside spellbinds the visitors the moment they enter the caverns. A variety of flora and fauna can also be seen within the cave.
