Gangtok is the capital and the largest town in Sikkim. It was established as a Buddhist pilgrimage in 1840 by the then-monarch of the region. Gangtok has always remained at the centre of its religious and economic activities. Here are some of the Buddhist monasteries in Gangtok that are exceptionally serene and beautiful.

(1) Do Drul Chorten

It is one of the most beautiful monasteries with its own charm and significance. It is also one of the tourist destinations in Gangtok.

(2) Rumtek Monastery

It is located in a place called Rumtek. It is one of the biggest monastery in Gangtok. Also known as Dharnachakra Centre. It belongs to the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded by the 9th Karmapa Lama. It is one of the famous monasteries amongst the locals as well as tourists.

(3) Enchey Monastery

It is located at an altitude of 5800 feet; Echey monastery is located at Echey Gaon. The monastery is known for its excellent tranquility. The village is surrounded by rich flora and one can witness amazing mountains from there. The monastery is beautified with colorful flowers surrounding it. This hilltop monastery is a must-visit of Gangtok.

(4) Tsuk La Khang Monastery

It is an imperial gompa and an integral part of the Tsuk La Khang royal palace. This splendid monastery is the centre of Buddhist literature and has served as a venue for many ceremonial celebrations of the royal family. This monastery has a simple palace yet beautiful at the back of the monastery. It is one of the most famous tourist attractions of the town. The monastery celebrates several annual festivals that showcase the ethnic mask dances that are performed by the monks.

(5) Lingdum Monastery

Lingdum Monastery (also Ranka Lingdum or Pal Zurmang Kagyud Monastery) is a Buddhist monastery near Ranka in Sikkim, North East India, about an hour's drive from Gangtok. It was completed in 1999.
