Umhang Lake is an artificial lake overlooking the golden yellow plains of Bangladesh. It resembles a gem in perfect sylvan setting. The lake at Wataw (Bataw) village is flanked by lush green forests on it either sides.
The lake is significant because on this spot Jaintia chieftain U Sajar Nangli dined and drank water from a spring to quench his thirst. He and his followers were so pleased with the place and the quality of water that they decided to create a lake incomparable to any lakes in the Jaintia kingdom. The magnificent lake took several months to be dug.
The lake is sacred to the people of Wataw. Here too the people of Wataw regard the Umhang Lake with reverence and pay homage along with sacrifices annually. The people do not permit its use for any other purpose and zealously guard its environs from any ingress.
