Ruled by the chief Angh, Shangnyu is a prominent village in Mon. A massive wood carving originally placed at the entrance of the Angh’s house is believed to have been constructed by two brothers with the help of a spirit during the metallic age. This carving is now preserved in a museum facing the Angh’s house. Some stone monoliths are also seen in front of the ‘Angh’s Palace’. The structure is eight feet in height and twelve feet in width. It has beautiful statues of human beings and other living beings.
Shangnyu village is located in Shangnyu Tehsil of Mon district in Nagaland, India. It is situated 18km away from sub-district headquarter Shangnyu and 18km away from district headquarter Mon. Shangnyu has a total population of approx 1900 people. There are about 370 houses in Shangnyu village.
Shangnyu village is home to the Konyak Naga tribe and reflects the colorful culture of the Naga people. It is also seen that the Shangnyu tribe shared a cordial and friendly relation with the Ahom kings of Assam in the past years.
