One of the famous spot at a distance of almost 11 kilometres away from Darjeeling is Senchal Lake and the lake can be reached via Ghoom and Jorebunglow. Senchal Lake is famous for a day trip or a picnic which is surrounded by a mountain on all sides and then the lake. At an altitude of 2,487m the Senchal Lake is located; atop a hill is the runoff of for most of the streams of the Senchal & Chatakpur forest. The Senchal Lake is also a part of the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary which is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries of Darjeeling hills and so of India.
The Senchal National Park is opened in the year of 1915 and the Senchal Lake is the main reservoir for water supply to the town of Darjeeling also the lake is fully surrounded by huge trees and forests. There are different kinds of trees like an oak forest, birch, pines, etc and plantation in the forest. Various types of flowering plants like Rhododendron and Orchids are also found in the forest and there are almost over 350 types of flowering plants.
One needs to take a guide to go around the area and a special permission from the ranger’s officer at Jorebunglow to enter the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, since it is a restricted area. Although the road condition is very good which goes through the Sanctuary but one can keep driving to watch the flora and the fauna. In the dense forest of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, one can also see different types of wild animals like barking deers, flying squirrels, Himalayan black bears, wild dogs, leopards, monkeys, scaly anteaters and many more.
Varieties of birds like red jungle fowl, golden back woodpecker, black-backed pheasant, Babblers, emerald cuckoos, Sunbirds, hornbills etc. can also be seen in the sanctuary hence the sanctuary is good for bird watching. The Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary along with Senchal Lake is accessible easily by road. Apart from monsoon season one can visit anytime the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary and Senchal Lake. One can do cycling in cycling route of the forest and can easily get the cycle on rent from Darjeeling. A permit is required to pass through the routes and one can purchase the permit at the sanctuary entrance. The cycling track is strictly for cycling only and it is strictly closed for the cars and motorbikes. The permit for per cycle is INR 50.00 only and cyclists are not allowed to carry any types of snacks with them inside the forest.
